Deep winter in eastern Manitoba – The harsh Canadian Prairies. It’s 1932 and Brett and Cliff are in a survival scenario that occurred frequently in the early days of bush flying in Canada. They’ve had to make an emergency landing on a remote frozen lake when their plane engine fails. They remove the skis from the landing gear to make a sled and take the compass and aero-topo charts from the plane. They have just a day’s worth of food and a survival kit (a “ditch bag”) designed for one person – along with one pair of snowshoes. They siphon gas from the plane for making a fire but with only four matches, a fire is not always certain. With no tent they must build a snow shelter and share the one sleeping bag they have to protect them from the elements. The guys do all they can to snare rabbits and hunt for small game with a rifle. Their last obstacle is their most dangerous – crossing a half frozen river to reach a chance to contact civilization.
